Aunt Polly was still in her chair when the two of them entered the little white farmhouse.

Sunlight shone through the open window above one of the floor cabinets, casting a sweet, yellow light on Aunt Polly’s head, resting peacefully on her folded arms on the table. Scruffy, his shaggy fur still clean from yesterday’s bath, was sleeping at her feet. His tail had begun to thump on the floor the moment they had entered, though he had not moved from his position.

Megan gave a swift glance at Joshua. How would he feel about the dog in the house during the day? Relief swam through her as she saw the huge grin on his face.

“Looks like Aunt Polly has her own personal guard.”

Megan laughed and shook her head, her eyes on the sleeping aunt. “She looks peaceful, too. I guess maybe I should get her back to her bed.”

Joshua put the basket on the table. “I saw Doc while I was down at the hardware store and he said he is coming out to see her on Wednesday. I told him how well she is doing and he was pleased.”

Megan stepped closer to Aunt Polly and put her hand on the shawl covered shoulder. “Aunt Polly?”

The woman sat straight at once, her blue eyes bleary and a confused expression on her face. She glanced around the room, then up at Megan. “I must have fallen asleep.”

Megan and Joshua both laughed. “Yes, you did. At least it kept you out of trouble,” Joshua grinned. “Maybe you should take a short rest before the noon meal. We don’t want you to over-do, just yet.”

“Nonsense!” Aunt Polly said, now sitting even straighter. “I’ve obviously already had my morning rest. I’ll help Megan with the food. In fact, I’ve got some makings for a pie going for supper tonight.”

“In that case, I’ll be back in here after I change my dress,” Megan said, reaching for her reticule she had set on the table. And there, a corner of the small envelope, shoved under the spooner that was kept on the table, was her letter. “I guess I left this behind.” She had been so sure that the letter had been in her reticule and not left behind. She shook her head. Maybe she just hadn’t been paying attention.

Aunt Polly nodded as she stood from her chair, smoothing her apron and adjusting the tie. She reached for her crutch and put it under her arm. “I found it on the floor. I guess you dropped it when you set down your things to get my coffee before you left. I guess it was my fault.”

Megan smiled and tucked the letter in her reticule. “If it was anyone’s fault, it was my own, for not paying attention. I will mail it the next time I am in town. I’m sure that the aunts are waiting to hear from me.” No doubt Aunt Agatha was fretting away, and Aunt Beatrice was chewing her nails. Which probably made Aunt Agatha even more irritated and critical of anything that Aunt Beatrice did.
